War in Ukraine: Western allies fly conflicting messages over Kiev

Despite persistent requests for urgent air support from top Kyiv authorities, US President Joe Biden has decided against sending F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.

Mr. Biden responded “no” when asked on Monday if the US would be providing the planes. The UK added that sending its planes to Ukraine was “not realistic.”

Prior to meeting a Ukrainian minister, France’s Emmanuel Macon declared that “by definition, nothing is barred.”

According to Ukraine, cutting-edge jets will help defend its airspace against Russian strikes.

There should be no taboos on such military assistance, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the country’s top military officers, but the US and its allies worry that this would escalate the situation with a nuclear-armed Russia.
