Scanners

Scanners can be used a variety of ways in the field. We can use them for monitoring police and fire frequencies, amateur band frequencies, and weather/skywarn broadcasts. Some scanners will let you listen into FM/AM Radio as well as Television broadcasts.

Many options are available to the chaser. Some scanners have now gone digital which will allow you to listen in to digital trunked radios. These communication systems use a range of frequencies to communicate, and will jump frequency to frequency. The trunk tracking scanners will follow the conversation over the various frequencies. These analog trunking scanners will detect and track EDAC, Motorola, and LTR based trunking systems. The digital trackers will follow APCO trunking radios.

The manufacturer's that I am familiar with are Uniden and Realistic (Radio Shack). I have owned a few scanners over the years, and by far my favorite has been the Uniden 785d. This is a digitally capable scanner with a large memory bank. It features an alpha-numeric display, and can be programmed with your PC or with your laptop on the fly! A speaker-out plug on the back makes connecting an external speaker very simple.
