The cellular phone has become an important communication device used in the field. Coverage areas have grown substantially in the past few years, and coverage is usually available anywhere.
If you are planning on using a cell phone for a backup communication device, usually your basic phone will work without issues. If you are planning on using your device for a primary communication device, it is wise to have an external antenna for a stronger signal.
Many people use their cell phones for connecting to the internet. It may also be useful to have an external antenna for this case as well.
Many of the newer cell phones can interface with your PC and used as a modem to make an internet connection. Some still use an interface cable while some use an infrared port. Either way, make sure your laptop and cell phones are compatible!
It is also a good idea to select a cell plan with plenty of minutes. You may be in the field downloading quite a few images, and your minutes may be used up faster than you think (experience talking here)!!
Having an automobile charger in your vehicle and an extra battery are accessories to consider!
